We should ask our children to forgive us …

As parents, we expect our children to obey right away! We make them memorize Eph. 6:1 as soon as they can talk, and post it all over the house for them to remember the #1 house rule – EVERYBODY OBEYS MOMMY & DADDY! If the children dare break the #1 rule – they are swiftly and severly disciplened for it.
But where is our note reminding us of God’s #1 rule for us? God said in Mark 12:30, “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the FIRST COMMANDMENT.”

It’s a bit hypocrital of us if we, as parents, expect our children to obey their 1st commandment without question or delay and yet we ignore our 1st commandment for our Father, the Lord.  If we truly obeyed God’s commandments to us, then we would teach our children, that if we disobey God’s rules, then we as parents have to suffer consequenes as well.  They must realize that just like they are supposed to obey us, we are supposed to obey God.

If we ‘forget’ to obey God’s rules we should ask God to forgive us. Then, I think we need to go a step farther and ask our children to forgive us as well.  Children learn by what we do, not by what we say … if we tell them to obey, but we do not obey – we will be raising a generation of hypocritical parents instead of Godly, Christian leaders for Christ!
